This is a quick mini collage series that depicts some of my discarded typographic and screen printed works.
"Eternal Peace"
This print depicts an image of a graveyard that I took in the summer of 2020 during quarantine. Although cemeteries are often portrayed as creepy or foreboding, I have always been attracted to them because they provide a quiet place of solitude. At that time, I was seeking peace in my personal life, and spending time in the stillness allowed me a chance to pause and relax. Moreover, being surrounded by reminders of those who lived before me always prompted me to reflect upon my own life and its fragility. The church in the background served as a reminder of the peace that I could find in knowing my own eternal destination, so I wanted to emphasize both it and a couple of specific gravestones through the strategic use of color.
For the color scheme, I chose desaturated hues of blue, a color I have always found to be soothing and calming. In addition, I chose a very transparent pink-tan hue for the church and gravestones to evoke a sense of temporality in the structures.
Screen Print Collages
I created these collages using scraps from some of my discarded screen prints, a bit of my handmade paper, and some steel, of course.
"Lost But Found"
This print centers around themes of home and hope. The house-like structure originated from a photo I took of Messiah’s covered bridge but is also representative of a house, as I often refer to Messiah as my second home. The sheet music contains the lyrics to the song “Amazing Grace,” a hymn that has held significance to me since childhood. The golden lotus flowers, symbolic of hope, originated from a necklace that I wear regularly.
I titled this print “Lost But Found” for three reasons: First, the title pulls from the lyrics to “Amazing Grace.” Second, the title alludes to the ways in which individuals can find a sense of self in a home. Finally, the title references how personal struggles have caused me to lose hope and yet regain it through faith and the support of friends.
